Jump Ball Drill
Setup
A player and a coach stand six to eight yards away from each other. Players stand with their back turned to the coach.
Purpose
Teach players to quickly locate the location of a fumbled football and to quickly dive on top of it.
Drill Description
The coach tosses a football straight up into the air like a jump ball in basketball. As soon as the ball begins its descent, the coach says “Ball!” to the player, instructing the player to turn around.
The ball should land on the ground somewhere in between the coach and player. As soon as the player turns around, he attempts to quickly identify where the ball is and jump on top of the ball to secure the fumble recovery.
To make this drill more difficult, the coach can spin the ball in a crazy rotation for the toss in order to make it bounce in more random and unpredictable directions.
